Introduction
NameCoach, a web-based tool that allows users to record, listen to, and learn name pronunciations, is available to all University of Utah and University of Utah Health students, faculty, and staff in Canvas, the university’s learning management system.
NameCoach can be used to record names and playback name recordings made by others via web recorder or phone. The tool has two parts: NameCoach Recorder, which allows users to record their own name and add phonetic spelling of their name, and NameCoach Roster, which allows students and instructors to listen to and learn the names of others in a Canvas course.
Put into Practice
Add Your Name to NameCoach
- Log in to Canvas: https://utah.instructure.com/ (authentication required)
- Access the recording screen in NameCoach or NameCoach Recorder:
- NameCoach: Navigate to any course, and then select NameCoach.
- NameCoach Recorder:
- Select Account at the top-left navigation bar.
- Select NameCoach Recorder.
- On the subsequent Your recording for Name Profile page, select the Record Name button to the right of your name.
- A box will appear with the email, first name, and last name fields filled in. You may choose to enter a phonetic spelling of your name in the Phonetic Spelling box or leave this field blank.
- You have two options to record your name:
- Select Phone to have NameCoach call you, or
- Select Web Recorder to record your name using your computer's microphone.
Follow the instructions below based to how you choose to record your name. When recording, be sure to speak clearly and audibly into your device. Please note that the maximum time allowed for recording a name is 10 seconds.
- Select the Phone option and enter your phone number into the text field provided.
The phone number field will display as green if entered correctly or red if the phone number has not been entered correctly. - Select the Call Me Now button
- Do not navigate away from the page. You will receive a call in less than a minute. Follow the phone instructions to record your name and save it to NameCoach.
- If needed, you can listen to your recording and re-record it. Once you are satisfied with your name recording, end the call but remain on the NameCoach web page as your recording is uploaded to NameCoach.
- Once your recording has been successfully uploaded, a message will appear below the recording play button confirming that your recording has been uploaded: “Your recording is ready, don’t forget to click ‘Submit and Finish’ to submit the form!” At this point, you can replay your recording by selecting the play icon.
- Select the Submit and Finish button.
- This action will return you to the Your recording for Name Profile page, where a play button in the Name Recording box will now appear.
- Select the Web recorder option.
- Select the Record button to record your name.
- When you are finished recording, select the Stop button.
- A play icon will appear next to the Record button after a recording is completed. Select the play icon to review your recording and re-record if necessary.
- Select the Submit and Finish button when you are satisfied with the recording.
- This action will return you to the Your recording for Name Profile page, where a play button in the Name Recording box will now appear.
Note: Start your NameCoach session in Chrome, Firefox, or Microsoft Edge. The web recorder does not work in Safari and is unavailable in Internet Explorer.
- Select the Uploader option.
- Drag and drop any audio file in .mp3, .mp4, .m4a, or .wav format or select the Browse for file button.
- Select the Submit and Finish button when you are satisfied with the recording.
Edit Your Recording
You may edit your NameCoach recording at any time.
- Navigate to Your recording for Name Profile page.
- Select Edit this Recording.
- Follow the instructions above to record your name via phone or web recorder.
- Select the Submit and Finish button.
Listen to Available Recordings
- Log in to Canvas: https://utah.instructure.com/ (authentication required)
- Locate and select the NameCoach option on the left-hand navigation of Canvas.
- The names of classmates or instructors who have submitted a recording will be listed.
- Select the Play button next to an individual’s name.
Instructors Only: Invite Students to Record Their Name
- Log in to Canvas: https://utah.instructure.com/ (authentication required)
- In the course navigation menu, select NameCoach. If you are asked to give NameCoach access to your account, select Authorize.
- To view the roster of course members who have not yet made recordings, select Unrecorded Names.
- To send a reminder to everyone in the list, select Remind All. To select an individual, select the envelope icon next to their name.
- In the pop-up window, review and, as needed, edit the message subject and body before sending.
- When you are satisfied with the message, select Send Reminder(s).
The people you've selected will receive messages in their default Canvas email account (in most cases, this is their UMail accounts).
