How do I add captions to my video in My Media in Canvas?

Updated on

Kaltura REACH captions are now available on all new videos uploaded to your Kaltura (My Media) account. Kaltura REACH uses automated speech recognition (ASR) to create machine-based captions for your videos. Machine captions will now be provided by default for all videos uploaded after October 26, 2020.  Machine captions provided by Kaltura REACH are typically 75%-85% accurate and can be edited in the captions editor feature to improve accuracy. For more information about the captions editor, visit the How do I edit video captions in My Media in Canvas guide.

Machine-based captioning alone may not produce fully ADA-compliant content. If a student with a Center for Disability & Access accommodation, the student will still need to contact the Center for Disability & Access to ensure full accessibility.

If you do not have access to a Canvas course or the My Media link is not activated in your course, My Media in Canvas can also be accessed by clicking the Account link in the Global Navigation and selecting theMy Media link that is listed in the fly-out window. For more information, visit the How to access My Media in Canvas guide.

2. Select the title of the video you want to add machine captions to

3. Click the "Actions" button and select the "Captions & Enrich" option

4. In the Service field, select the "Machine" option. In the Features field, select the "Captions" option.

5. Click the "Save" button

If Kaltura REACH machine captions do not meet your needs, you can request professional captions. To request professional captions, email [email protected] and indicate that you would like to have a video captioned. Please include the exact title of your video(s), your course name and number, and your UNID.

Please be aware that professional captions can take up to 7 business days to appear in your video. Once your professional captions are live, they will override the machine captions that appear by default.
