Boxes Overview

Updated on

Canvas doesn't provide box styles via the Rich Content Editor (RCE), so we've developed some box styles you can use. This module includes basic boxes, boxes with bars, and some special case designs like combining text with an image. If none of the preformatted styles in this resource meet your needs, we have a tutorial page explaining how you can customize our basic code.

A word of caution: Use boxes sparingly and in a consistent way. If you use boxes to visually highlight several examples, use the same type of box for each example. That will lessen the cognitive load for students and improve readability.

Also keep in mind that boxes don't provide the same type of structure created by headings and lists because they aren't programmatically recognized by screen readers. Some students may not be able to see the boxes or will see color differently, so you shouldn't rely on the appearance of a box to convey information.

Learn how to customize box code in the Tutorial section of this module.
