What is Kaltura Media and Mediaspace Video Portal?

Updated on

Kaltura Media is the video platform for the University of Utah.  All University students, staff and faculty have a Kaltura account, which allows users to create, edit and share video content within Canvas or publish to external sites.

Kaltura is accessed in one of two ways.  (Click the links below to access help articles related to these two options).

  1. Canvas My Media - Give you access to your Kaltura video library inside of Canvas and allows users to upload and embed video content into their course
  2. Mediaspace My Media - Give you access to your Kaltura video library outside of canvas and allows you to share, download and embed your video content anywhere.

Each user’s account serves as their personal collection of videos.  All videos uploaded or created within a user’s account are associated with that users University ID and are only viewable to the account owner unless published to a course channel, page or external site. Each user’s My Media account is accessible in Canvas for curriculum publishing and at mediaspace.utah.edu for public, external publishing.

Kaltura also integrates with the campus Zoom account (utah.zoom.us).  All Zoom recordings that are saved to the cloud are automatically copied to the host’s My Media (Kaltura) account in Canvas/Mediaspace.  In addition, all videos uploaded to My Media are machine captioned automatically.
