How to share a Google Doc link to Force Copy

Updated on

By now, most University of Utah users are familiar with the collaborative nature of Google Docs. Most have probably also experienced a situation where you shared a Google Doc that you didn't really want others to edit. It is also pretty common knowledge that to prevent that, you use a method called "Force Copy."

1. Open the Google Doc

2. Click the "Share" button

Use that link when sharing and the person you are sharing with will get a prompt to "make a copy" when they click it. You can also bookmark that link so that you get the "make a copy" prompt if you are using it for a template.
