What are Video Capture Classrooms?

Introduction

During Summer 2020, DLT installed over 100 General Access classrooms with simple Video Capture Classroom systems. These systems allow users to connect their laptops to the installed camera and mic through a USB interface.  Once connected, users can record or videoconference using Kaltura Capture or Zoom software on their laptop.

Each room has an installed PTZ camera that can be adjusted using the included remote control.  Users can set camera presets to quickly move the camera framing to different areas of the room.  However, these cameras do not automatically track the subject.  If your class needs close camera tracking, you may want to consider using DLT's Zoom Class Streaming service. These classrooms require a USB cable to connect to the capture system.  USB and HDMI cables can be checked out from the DLT Service Desk in MLIB 1705.  TLT can also checkout wireless USB lavalier mics to use with these systems.  Lavalier mics may be a better audio option than the installed microphone for certain rooms. 

  • We recommend using a 6 ft. USB 2.0 cable with these systems for best results.  Also, plugging in your laptop power supply may be required for your laptop to register the camera.
  • During Summer 2023, USB inputs in these classrooms will be swapped out with the USB-B 2.0 style input.  These cables will be available for checkout at the DLT Service Desk in MLIB 1705.

FAQs and Common Challenges

What do I need to use the installed camera system?

You will need a USB cable to use the USB capture system.  DLT placed a USB in every room, but we recommend carrying a cable with you just in case the classroom cable was removed. Cable length cannot exceed 10 feet due to USB limitations.

Can I rent a USB cable to use in the room?

DLT Equipment Services rents cables free of charge for courses.

Does my classroom have a USB camera installed in it?

To see if your classroom is equipped with a USB camera or other features, you can refer to the list above or email [email protected] 

How do I adjust the camera angle?

A remote for the camera is provided in the room, attached with Velcro and a cord.  Numbers 1, 2, 3 on the remote are programmed with three basic camera angle presets.  You can also use the arrow pad to pan and tilt the camera manually.

Is there a microphone provided for the Zoom call?

All USB capture classrooms are equipped with an installed microphone either mounted to the ceiling or placed on the podium.  This microphone will be selectable from a drop-down list in your audio settings. The provided microphone provides the advantage of picking up your voice as you walk around while you teach and picking up in-person student questions.  In some cases, you may experience better quality audio by selecting to use your laptop’s internal microphone.  There will be pros and cons to both microphone options.

Are there external microphones available to use with the system?

Yes. DLT Equipment Services has lavalier microphones available to checkout for use with the USB camera capture systems.  These are a good option if you expect to walk around a lot while you teach.  You can check out a USB lavalier microphone at the DLT Service Desk located in MLIB 1705 (Faculty Center).  There is no charge for portable equipment checkout for use in courses.

Can I show the projection screen to remote learning students?

You can aim the camera at the projection screen.  Preset one on the remote will quickly zoom in on the screen.  If you want the remote students on the Zoom call to see the screen content, you might consider sharing your screen through Zoom screen share option, rather than aiming the camera at the projection screen.

Is technical training available?

You may schedule a demo with a DLT staff member. Due to schedule and high tech support demand, we may need one business day advance notice to create the appointment.

What should I do if the USB capture system doesn’t work?

Don’t panic! If you are holding a Zoom class, keep in mind you will still be able to run the Zoom call using your computer mic and built-in camera on your laptop. Please call DLT to report any issues with the USB capture system, and we will work to resolve any problems that arise.
